Always be runway-ready with the latest trends in fashion eyewear:
Here’s a fun guide on the hottest trends for fall 2011 styles!

Trend #1: Luxe Details
Extravagant detailing and designs were all over the fall runways, in the form of rhinestones, crystals and intricate temple embellishments, as well as gold, silver, and velvet accents. The result is very feminine and chic.
Try:

Lafont Fortune

Lafont Flirt

Lafont Gaufrette

Judith Lieber Glam Stone

Trend #2: Bold Prints
Polka dots, lace, stripes, ombre and much more! Fun, wild colors and prints are all the rage this fall.
Try:
Alain Mikli Pact Collection

Etnia Salvador

Etnia Delft

Alain Mikli AL1010

Trend #3: Round
Whether they’re oversized bug-eye sunglasses, or small retro-style, round frames are a hit! Go for abstract tortoise patterns and honey brown shades and pair it with colored lenses for a little bit of 60’s flair.
Try:
Lunor 215

Persol 2869

Oliver Peoples Sheldrake

Trend #4: Retro
True rounds, rounded squares, and cat-eyes were very popular on this falls runway. Whether one chooses a bold plastic or a more minimalistic approach, this trend is easy to wear for anyone.

Try:

Oliver Peoples Wacks

Tom Ford TF5189

Lunor 211

Oliver Peoples Luv

Oliver People Boxley

Trend #5: Vintage Sport
Sporty, geometric styles are hot this fall, especially for men. Try modern versions of the classic metal aviator, blues, whites and tans, and frames with a double bridge.
Try:
DSquared 0061

Beausoliel C03

July 30, 2011

Optical Heights, a leading provider of top brand collections including Tom Ford, Robert Marc, Tom Davies, Oliver Peoples and Alain Mikli, will host a silent auction on August 20, 2011 from 3pm-9pm, to raise funds for The Sarah Grace Foundation (thesarahgracefoundation.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with cancer and to provide comfort and support to their families. Optical Heights will also donate 20% of its profits from the sale to all sunglasses and eyeglasses from the day.

On display will be art from various noted artists, including Len Mondschein (nostalgic and western art) who donated a stunning large-format giclee of Marilyn Monroe, Elinor Schoenfeld (fine arts and photography) and Charlene Sloane (jewelry). Also on display will be art from amateur local artists and students.

Optical Heights Co-Owners, Karen Sacco and Dianne H. Szwed, jointly commented on the upcoming event, “We’re happy to join with The Sarah Grace Foundation, whose dedication to children affected with cancer along with their families, has made a huge impact in the lives of many. We’re happy to bring together so many talented local artists along with the founding members of The Sarah Grace Foundation and people from all parts of Long Island to help a worthwhile cause.”

In addition to the art and brand-name eyewear on display, Optical Heights will serve a variety of refreshments in their boutique custom-designed by architect, Stuart Narofsky, along with a selection of fine cheeses, fruits, and more.

“The Sarah Grace Foundation is thrilled to have had this idea presented to us and look foward to the event itself,” said Matt Weippert, President, and co-founder of The Sarah Grace Foundation. “Sarah loved pursuing anything art related so this event is a great way to remember that and to honor her memory. We are happy to have the opportunity to work with Optical Heights and are very grateful to Karen and Dianne for sponsoring this event. Fundraising events such as this are imperative to the success of our programs and helping these wonderful children and their families.”

Dianne Szwed and Karen Sacco met in 1992, after working together as licensed opticians in an optical boutique in Great Neck, New York. After two years of working together, they quickly realized their mutual aspiration for opening their own optical boutique. In October of 1996, Optical Heights was opened for business. In a male-dominated business, Dianne and Karen established the first, upscale, fashionable store on Long Island, complete with an exam room, childrens room with a fun, handpainted mural, and even a cappuccino bar in the back. They carry exclusive lines that are not typically found in chain stores, such as Tom Davies, Freudenhaus and Lafont, as well as their own line, Sacco-Szwed which was launched in 2011. They place a lot of importance on customer service, and know both the technical and fashion sides of the business. “Nobody’s allowed out of our store if they don’t look good,” Karen joked once, in an article from Newsday. “Of course, people have to see, but they also have to look good.” Karen and Dianne continue to look towards the future of Optical Heights, and will continue to be focused on providing top-quality service and products to the people of Long Island.

In 2002, Matt and Marissa Weippert received the heartbreaking news that their 11 year old daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). She underwent various treatments such as high dose chemotherapy, cranial and full body irradiation, and a bone marrow transplant donated from her brother James, who at the time was 10 years old. Afterwards, Sarah regained some of her strength, and it seemed as if she won her battle with cancer. Six weeks later, Sarah’s condition relapsed, and the disease was more aggreesive than ever. Unfortunately, on November 9th, 2002, Sarah lost her battle with leukemia. Throughout her struggle, Sarah always maintained a positive attitude and kept smiling. After every treatment she went through, she would wake up and announce “I need a craft, and a snack!” Sarah’s love of life, art, music and games inspired Matt and Marissa to begin ‘The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children with Cancer Inc.’, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of children with cancer and to provide comfort and support to the families of those children. They give toys, crafts, ballgame tickets, and other pleasures to children to make their journey through cancer more bearable, and also to the siblings of the child who are affected as well. Additionally, they give financial and moral support, as well as any other necessary assistance to the parents of the children, and try to educate the public about childhood cancer.

Tortoise, schmortoise. This season, frames on sunglasses have got a lot more going on. Like stripes, dots, checks, florals and 3-D cutouts, to name a few.

“Clothes collections often lead the way,” says Karen Sacco, co-founder (with fellow optician Dianne Szwed) of Optical Heights in Roslyn Heights. Apparel designers have pushed animal prints, for instance, “and now you’re seeing that in frames,” Sacco says.

Optical Heights offers vivid brands like Chloe, DSquared, Tom Davies (with mix-and-match shapes and prints) and their own Sacco-Szwed line, out this year.

They’ve also got Lafont, a French, family-run label dating back to 1923, and arguably the top choice in chic, edgy eyewear. Lafont’s frames are pricey but like no others, with delicate, lacy cutouts and patterns akin to those Art Nouveau metro entrances in Paris.

For more affordable fare, try Rich & Famous, a new line launched by Dix Hills native Darren Goldman (whose family has sold eyewear for three generations) and Brit stylist Miles Siggins. The two met while working behind the scenes at “American Idol.”

The added benefit to all this razzle-dazzle? Patterned frames tend to be bigger, which shows off the design and provides more sun protection. Function and flair — a perfect combo.
